The new technology developed by VTT, Technical Research Centre of Finland makes it possible to identify the user based on her or his physical movements such as walking style. This feature prevents unauthorised use of portable devices such as laptops or mobile phones. In the future, credit cards may also verify user’s identify based on their physical movements before approval of payment transactions.
For the user the new identification system offers the advantages of increased security and reduction of risk in situations where a portable computer, mobile phone or other digital device has ended up in the wrong hands because of loss or theft. The device will become non-usable in the wrong hands. For example, the identity of a mobile phone user can be verified before the phone can be used for banking transactions. Compared with passwords and traditional bioidentification, the new method is simple: confirmation of identity takes place as a background process without any need for user’s intervention.
A device is equipped with sensors that measure certain characteristics of the user’s gait. When the device is used for the first time, these measurements are saved in its memory. In normal use the device continuously measures the user’s gait and compares these measurements with the values in its memory. If they are sufficiently identical, the device identifies and approves the user. If the values differ, standard password-based identification is available.
Gait-based identification is based on advanced computation, where the measured signals are first filtered and then certain parameters the so-called ‘gaitcode’ are calculated. In initial tests the identification rate was over 90%.
T-Mobile USA and Research In Motion (RIM) announce the availability of the new BlackBerry 7105t together with a new BlackBerry Internet E-mail service for Yahoo! Mail users. Whether in a meeting or out on the road, this new BlackBerry device and service offers an unmatched e-mail experience, providing busy professionals with the freedom to easily manage both corporate and personal messages, while on the go.
“RIM and T-Mobile have once again partnered to give consumers an even easier out-of-the-box experience for BlackBerry users,” said John Clelland, Senior Vice President of Segment Marketing for T-Mobile USA. “Now with enhanced Yahoo! Mail access, T-Mobile customers will be able to easily manage their personal and corporate e-mail all from the new BlackBerry 7105t.”
Yahoo! Mail is the No. 1 e-mail service in the world. Through T-Mobile, Yahoo! and BlackBerry - three brands that customers highly rely on for their communication needs - users will enjoy enhanced mobile access to their Yahoo! Mail accounts directly on their BlackBerry handset. With this new service, users will experience real-time delivery of e-mail messages sent to their Yahoo! Mail accounts, and enhanced wireless synchronization of sent and deleted items as well as read/unread message status. For example, Yahoo! Mail messages deleted on a BlackBerry handset can be automatically deleted in the consumers’ Yahoo! Mail account. In addition, users now have the ability to select different “sent from” addresses when sending a message - providing users with even more flexibility to manage both corporate and personal e-mail accounts while on the go. This service is now available for all T-Mobile USA BlackBerry customers.
“Today’s busy mobile professionals are always on the go and need a simple way to stay connected throughout the day. BlackBerry has become the communications tool of choice for mobile professionals that want greater freedom and flexibility,” said David Castell, Vice President, Retail Business Unit at Research In Motion. “Working together with T-Mobile and Yahoo!, we are now making it even easier for customers to communicate by enabling real-time access to Yahoo! Mail from their BlackBerry handset.”
Yahoo! is the first Internet e-mail provider to take advantage of the full suite of new integration options available via BlackBerry Internet Service to provide real-time, push-based delivery of Yahoo! Mail to T-Mobile customers. The new BlackBerry Internet E-mail service from T-Mobile is a component of BlackBerry Internet Service and provides enhanced integration and wireless synchronization with e-mail accounts, the ability to use multiple “sent from” addresses and one-click set up to further simplify the out-of-box user experience. For individuals and smaller businesses, BlackBerry Internet E-mail allows users to access up to ten corporate and/or personal e-mail accounts (including Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino and many popular ISP e-mail accounts) from a single device.
T-Mobile USA customers can enjoy this service using the new BlackBerry 7105t, a full-featured wireless device that maintains the features that BlackBerry 7100t users have enjoyed - quad-band phone, Bluetooth technology, speakerphone, wireless e-mail, text messaging, web browser, instant messaging, organizer, and RIM’s SureType technology. In addition, the BlackBerry 7105t features enhancements such as a new scratch-resistant, easy-to-read high-resolution color screen, larger send and end keys, and contoured keys for easier typing.

Sprint and Research In Motion (RIM) today announced the launch of the BlackBerry 7100i from Nextel, which has all the functionality of a traditional BlackBerry handheld in a slimmer, phone-like design. Operating on the Nextel National Network, the Blackberry 7100i is ideal for mobile professionals who desire an integrated device with email, a wireless phone, personal organizer, Bluetooth Technology, speakerphone, Web browsing and support for third-party Java Applications. The BlackBerry 7100i from Nextel also combines the power of BlackBerry with real-time GPS navigation and walkie-talkie services.
The BlackBerry 7100i features a high-resolution color display (240 x 260 pixels) to view Web pages, pictures and attachments in full, vibrant color. The BlackBerry 7100i also incorporates SureType keyboard technology. SureType effectively converges a phone keypad and a QWERTY keyboard to fit elegantly within the size of a traditional wireless phone form factor. Through an integrated keyboard and software system, SureType provides users with an instinctively familiar look and feel and enables them to dial phone numbers and type messages quickly, accurately and comfortably. The BlackBerry 7100i can also support full wireless synchronization of calendar, contacts, notes and tasks as well as text messaging and the ability to send, receive and store pictures.
“This device is different from most BlackBerry devices because it looks and feels more like a traditional phone - including a narrower, smaller form factor - yet it still boasts the functionality of BlackBerry that customers have come to expect,” said Vicki Warker, vice president of marketing for Sprint. “The addition of the BlackBerry 7100i handset to our broad portfolio of integrated devices demonstrates Sprint’s commitment to providing services that allow busy mobile professionals to stay connected and multitask from anywhere and everywhere.”
“RIM and Sprint have already enjoyed considerable success together providing customers with comprehensive wireless enterprise solutions. The new BlackBerry 7100i allows us to build on that momentum and extend the reach of BlackBerry to a wider range of users,” said Mark Guibert, Vice President, Corporate Marketing at Research In Motion. “The BlackBerry 7100i on the Nextel National Network is an attractive choice for customers who want all-in-one support for voice, messaging and data applications, but prefer the look and feel of a traditional handset.”
In addition to standard BlackBerry features, the Blackberry 7100i offers GPS technology for real-time, audible and visual turn-by-turn driving directions. For example, BlackBerry handhelds operating on the Nextel National Network support GPS-enabled navigation with TeleNav in the United States. On the Nextel National Network, assisted-GPS (A-GPS) technology and data service support outstanding performance so the customer can quickly get driving directions and update them in real time, even when the driver misses a turn at high speeds and immediately needs a new route.
The BlackBerry 7100i provides unmatched walkie-talkie capabilities, including domestic and international Nextel Walkie-Talkie services. The BlackBerry 7100i also offers the Talkgroup service, enabling instant connection with up to 100 other Nextel users who are on the same Fleet or Nextel Walkie-Talkie network within the same home market.
Wireless email and messaging stay secure with triple DES and AES encryption supported on BlackBerry Enterprise Server for corporate users. BlackBerry Enterprise Server is available for Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino and Novell GroupWise. For smaller corporations and individual users, BlackBerry Internet Service allows users to access up to ten corporate and/or personal email accounts (including Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino and many popular ISP email accounts) from a single device.
The BlackBerry 7100i comes with 64 MB of flash memory, 8 MB of SRAM and a removable, rechargeable lithium ion battery. The BlackBerry 7100i will be available starting next week through Sprint business sales channels for a suggested retail price of $349.99 before discounts and promotions.
